AN 1002: Sociocultural Anthropology | ANTH 1101: Peoples and Cultures | IC | 4.00 | No | So what is sociocultural anthropology? It is a social science dedicated to the study of the human experience. This means that, as anthropologists, we are simultaneously interested in discovering what human beings have in common, and in what ways they differ from one another. We cherish and seek to champion human diversity. Our approach is cross-cultural, comparative and holistic. We examine similarity and difference across societies in attempt to understand others within the context of their daily lives. In so doing we strive to look at the broader contexts of people’s worlds, their practices, their histories and the often unseen forces that impact them. How do we go about this work? Anthropologists strive to know others through close interaction, dialogical conversation and collaboration. Our central method is participant-observation: we participate in and observe others’ worlds, usually over an extended period of time. In other words, to learn about a particular group of people, we pack up our bags and go live with them for a time. We learn about others by living as they do. In short, we strive to understand the manner in which people, usually from a very different background, see, sense and inhabit the world. And even if we do not agree with them, we strive to understand and represent their worldview, from their point of view. So what we will do in this class? In the space of one course I certainly cannot turn you into anthropologists, but I can provide you with an anthropological lens (a new pair of glasses if you will). In this class, I introduce you to the discipline’s history, core concepts, key methods and a selection of important subfields. By the end of the class you should have a good sense of the discipline but you should also have strengthened your inter-cultural competencies, and so your capacity to travel across borders, your analytical abilities (especially those that allow you to decipher sociocultural dynamics, structures and identities), and your observation and communication skills. | 11,222 | Sociocultural Anthropology | AN 1002 | Sociocultural Anthropology | ANTH 1101 | Peoples and Cultures | 10 | 290. AR 1010: Intro to Drawing | ARTF 1120: Observational Drawing | EI | 4.00 | No | This studio course provides an introduction to the basic ideas and techniques needed for the practice of figurative drawing. Students will be asked to use what they learn in order to create ever more complex and personal drawings. The first step to being able to draw object, space, exteriors, nature and human figures, consists of learning how to see it. Consequently, we will start by analyzing simple subjects in basic plastic terms, working first on drawing gesture, create a composition, studying values and contrasts, then on constructions and application of the main rules of the linear perspective. We will have several outdoor sketching sessions to practice. Students will learn how to use different drawing tools and media such as pencil, charcoal, ink, chalk. A sketchbook that the student will keep for visual note taking is an important component of this class. Drawing is an essential element to understanding basic visual problems and the sketchbook provides an opportunity to explore ideas quickly and gives the artist a place to experiment and develop ideas. The primary goal of this class is to give each student the basic techniques of observation drawing so that they may continue their development individually after class ended. | 11,224 | Intro to Drawing | AR 1010 | Intro to Drawing | ARTF 1120 | Observational Drawing | 10 | 290. EC 2010: Principles Of Microeconomics | ECON 1116: Principles of Microeconomics | SI, AD | 4.00 | No | Economics is a discipline that studies how societies and especially modern societies organized by markets try to deal with the problem of scarcity. This course will acquaint students with the principles of economics that apply to societies at an individual or micro-economic level as opposed to an aggregate or macro-economic level. The principles that apply at the latter level are the focus of another course, Principles of Macroeconomics (EC2020). During this course, we will examine prices and how they can allocate scarce resources among alternative uses. We will also examine markets, how they can work, and how they can fail. | 11,227 | Principles Of Microeconomics | EC 2010 | Principles of Microeconomics | ECON 1116 | Principles of Microeconomics | 10 | 290. BA 2010: Entrepreneurship & New Ventures | ENTR 1201: The Entrepreneurial Universe | 4.00 | No | In global economies, entrepreneurship is the engine of economic growth and prosperity. It is important for you to understand the underlying principles and concepts about entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial process. This course covers the personal characteristics and qualities of the entrepreneur, opportunity assessment, and the role of entrepreneurship in developed and developing economies. One of the key issues in successfully starting and growing a global venture, particularly if outside capital is needed, is to create a global business model (and, to a lesser extent, a business plan). The development of a global business model and plan and all of its components (with particular focus on value proposition, value architecture, and revenue model) are presented. The various sources of capital are discussed and the ways entrepreneurs protect their ideas via patents, copyrights, etc. | 11,229 | Entrepreneurship & New Ventures | BA 2010 | Entrepreneurship & New Ventures | ENTR 1201 | The Entrepreneurial Universe | 10 | 290. CM 2014: Comparative Journalism: Gutenberg To Google | JRNL 1150: Understanding Today's News | SI, DD | 4.00 | No | This course examines the foundations of modern journalism by tracings its origins from the Gutenberg printing press to digital age of Google in different historical, political and cultural contexts. Students will study the emergence of modern journalism as a profession and the challenges posed to its autonomy by the pressures of commerce, states, propaganda, public relations, advertising, disinformation, and social media. The impact of new technologies on journalism practices — the printing press, electronic media, internet — will be assessed. The course also takes a comparative approach to examine different models of journalism values and practices — for example, the Anglo-liberal vs authoritarian model. Issues such as state censorship and press freedom will be examined and discussed through national case studies. The wider question of “truth” will be a theme throughout the course. Can journalism make a claim on objective truth? Recent controversies over “fake news” and assertions that we are living in a “post-truth” era make this question particularly relevant to our understanding of journalism’s role in the digital age. | 11,237 | Comparative Journalism: Gutenberg To Google | CM 2014 | Comparative Journalism: Gutenberg To Google | JRNL 1150 | Understanding Today's News | 10 | 290. BA 2040: Marketing In A Global Environment | MKTG 2201: Introduction to Marketing | 4.00 | No | The aim of this course is to provide a solid grounding to students interested in managing creativity and the various aspects of the innovation process within organizations. The course is divided into two parts. The first part focuses mainly on the creativity process. We will discuss three themes: What is creativity? How can creativity be stimulated? How can creative ideas be translated to innovative products and business strategies? Based on major theories in the field, we discuss whether monetary rewards enhance or undermine creativity, how multitasking or working under time pressure affects creativity, what tools we can provide to stimulate creativity, and the challenges that arise when implementing creative ideas in organizations. The second part of the course examines the organizational issues involved in innovating and in implementing innovations. These issues include management of teams and partnerships, learning within and across projects, the manager's role in funding, directing, and killing innovation projects, forecasting technological change, fighting standards wars, and stimulating the diffusion of innovation. | 11,241 | Marketing In A Global Environment | BA 2040 | Marketing In A Global Environment | MKTG 2201 | Introduction to Marketing | 10 | 290. CM 2006: Media Globalization | MSCR 2990: Media and Screen Studies Elective (Media Globalization) | 4.00 | No | What is globalization? Why study the media? What is the relationship between the media and globalization? What are the consequences of media globalization on our lives and identities? This course critically explores these questions and challenging issues that confront us today. Globalization can be understood as a multi-dimensional, complex process of profound transformations in all spheres – technological, economic, political, social, cultural, intimate and personal. Yet much of the current debates of globalization tend to be concerned with “out there” macro-processes, rather than what is happening “in here,” in the micro-processes of our lives. This course explores both the macro and the micro. It encourages students to develop an enlarged way of thinking – challenging existing paradigms and providing comparative perspectives. | 11,242 | Media Globalization | CM 2006 | Media Globalization | MSCR 2990 | Media and Screen Studies Elective (Media Globalization) | 10 | 290. PL 2041: Environmental Ethics | PHIL 1180: Environmental Ethics | SI, ER | 4.00 | No | This course is dedicated to the ethics and politics of the Anthropocene. It will delve into some of the major voices that have shaped the environmental-philosophy discourse over the last 20 to 30 years. It will explore diverse concepts aimed at characterizing our epoch and diagnose its causes. The course will seek to understand whether it is possible to envision planetary ethics and politics without obliterating differences of race, class, gender, worldview, but instead by starting from the experiences of the margins of society. The course will also highlight the distinctions between political and ethical approaches to environmental issues as well as any potential links between the two. The final part of the course will focus on two case studies that exemplify the multifaceted range of problems and applications in environmental philosophy: the first revolves around the transformation of the notion of individuality, prompted by ecology and its contributions to both life sciences and humanities; the second addresses the issues of ethical and social justice raised by the development of climate prediction models in climatology. | 11,243 | Environmental Ethics | PL 2041 | Environmental Ethics | PHIL 1180 | Environmental Ethics | 10 | 290. PO 2031: World Politics | POLS 1160: International Relations | SI | 4.00 | No | This one semester course provides an overview of contemporary international relations. It examines the fundamental concepts of world politics and combines theoretical and historical perspectives to analyze major trends and issues. Special attention is given to processes of globalization and fragmentation that challenge the traditional order of politics in and among states. Discussions of the new global challenges cover classical questions of foreign policy and “harder” international security issues, such as strategy and alliances, war and peace, nuclear proliferation, transnational anti-state terrorism, as well as so-called “softer” topics like international law and institutions, human rights and human security, environmental problems, non-state actors, development, poverty and global financial crisis. | 11,244 | World Politics | PO 2031 | World Politics | POLS 1160 | International Relations | 10 | 290. AR 1061: Digital Photography | ARTD 2360: Introduction to Photography | 4.00 | No | Digital Photography is an introductory course in the radical act of conscientious seeing. In this course you will be challenged not simply to look and reproduce what you see in photographic form, but rather, you will learn to take the time to observe, to study, to consider your subject from multiple angles and perspectives. You will need to learn to slow down and take a step back from our society’s hurried, cursory exchange of images. What is the mystery that makes us come back, over and over, to certain photographs? A great photograph, ultimately, is one that poses a question; it does not necessarily prove anything. | 11,246 | Digital Photography | AR 1061 | Digital Photography | ARTD 2360 | Introduction to Photography | 10 | 290. CM/VC 2100: Introduction To Visual Culture | ARTH 1001/1002: Visual Intelligence with Seminar | IC | 4.00 | No | This course considers the construction of the visual world and our participation in it. Through a transcultural survey of materials, contexts and theories, we will deploy “tactics for studying the functions of a world addressed through pictures, images, and visualizations, rather than through texts and words”. To do so, we will engage film, photography, advertisement, news reports, but also museum exhibitions and vernacular images – images made by ordinary people in ordinary situations – such as YouTube amateur videos clips or selfies. We will examine the virality of these representations and how they circulate through media and new media. We will notably consider the importance of social media such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, their impact on the redefinition of community and identity, and their role in the construction of social, cultural, and political movements. Recognizing the predominance of visual forms of media, communication, and information in the post-modern world, we will explore their power in transforming not only our world and society, but also in forming them, more and more. | 11,247 | Introduction To Visual Culture | CM/VC 2100 | Introduction To Visual Culture | ARTH 1001/1002 | Visual Intelligence with Seminar | 10 | 290. AH 1091: Intro to Global Art through Paris Museums | ARTH 1990: Art History Elective (Introduction to Global Art through Paris Museums) | 4.00 | Yes | Paris is a city rich in museum holdings, with extensive collections of art and objects produced by a wide variety of cultures. This course introduces students to the cultural production of various civilizations of Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and Asia through site visits to major French collections. We will engage directly with objects, emphasizing their historical context of production, original social functions, and traditional modes of display alongside their formal characteristics. We will also look critically at the biographies of these objects, tracing the often contested and violent ways in which they arrived in Paris and entered state museums. In so doing, we will consider broader questions such as the relationship between culture and power, the responsibilities of museums, and the global roots of 20th century European art. | 11,249 | Intro to Global Art through Paris Museums | AH 1091 | Intro to Global Art through Paris Museums | ARTH 1990 | Art History Elective (Introduction to Global Art through Paris Museums) | 10 | 290. FR/CL 2010: Paris Through Its Books | CLTR 2990: Culture Elective (Paris Through Its Books) | 4.00 | Yes | This interdisciplinary course, which draws on literature, visual arts, and philosophy, will set out to explore how the most diverse and mesmerizing visions of Paris come into being through creative intepretations of the city as an infinite manifold of sites and objects, persons and relations, ideas and feelings. Setting the stage with the quintessentially Romantic Paris of Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris, it will inhabit the royal and revolutionary imaginations and narratives of Dumas’ La Reine Margot and Hugo’s Les Misérables. It will trace the fortunes of “provincial” artistic and intellectual ambition of “making it in Paris” alongside characters of Balzac’s Lost Illusions. Proust’s memory will guide it through the golden haze of the Belle Époque on a search for belonging within one’s native society unforgiving of anyone and anything that “ne rentre pas dans la moule”. Hemingway’s Moveable Feast will initiate it into the euphoric oblivion and the dream of innocence and simplicity of expatriate Paris in the 1920s. With Barbery, it will confront the myth and reality of intellectual and cultural Parisian supremacy and its repercussions on contemporary attitudes regarding basic human dignity, freedom and happiness. With these models in view, it will provide the curious and the adventurous with the opportunity to articulate and incarnate their own infinitely unique visions of Paris as a way of gaining awareness of the role the city will have played in the formation of their identity and their life. | 11,250 | Paris Through Its Books | FR/CL 2010 | Paris Through Its Books | CLTR 2990 | Culture Elective (Paris Through Its Books) | 10 | 290. GS/PY 2010: Introduction To Gender, Sexuality, And Society | WMNS 1101/SOCL 1102: Sex, Gender, and Popular Culture | 4.00 | No | In this course, we will focus on psychology, but not exclusively, because psychology is a relatively “recent” discipline, beginning as such, in Europe in the 19th century, where it drew on clinical medicine, physiology, and philosophy. Now psychology itself is divided into many sub-disciplines and specialties (to name a few: biological psychology, neuropsychology, social psychology, psychodynamic psychology, cognitive psychology, cultural psychology, health psychology, etc.). Psychology research continues to be informed by a larger network of neighboring disciplines (from public health to the social sciences) and influences them in turn. In many countries, psychology (perhaps more specifically “American psychology”) has in fact become quite successful in its influence on other disciplines and even on our common-sense thinking about what it means to be a person, as well as a person with a particular sex or gender. | 11,251 | Introduction To Gender, Sexuality, And Society | GS/PY 2010 | Introduction To Gender, Sexuality, And Society | WMNS 1101/SOCL 1102 | Sex, Gender, and Popular Culture | 10 | 290. PO 1012: Challenges of Global Politics | POLS 1155: Comparative Politics | 4.00 | No | This course explores changing patterns of power and organization in the modern world system – from the modern nation-state, the Industrial Revolution and nineteenth century European global expansion to the current turbulent phase of globalization – and theorizes key analytical and normative challenges of the present: global rebalancing and the emergence or reemergence of postcolonial states, uneven development, the role of culture in world politics, the future of the nation state, the global environmental imperative, the new landscape of armed conflict, the sources and implications of sharpening social divides, and the challenges to liberal-democratic theory and practice. Drawing, like Foundations of Modern Politics, on the social sciences and political philosophy, the course operates through a mix of theory and empirical study. Students will thus become acquainted to the essential frameworks and methods of social scientific enquiry while working on concrete objects of analysis. A core objective is to discover and grasp how major theoretical approaches differ in their interpretation and explanation of world politics, as well as in the normative models and demands that they advance. During the semester students will write a series of reviews of book chapters and articles, an exercise that aims to develop and enhance analytical capacities and writing skills (all materials will be on TEAMS). They are also expected to participate in debate during class. | 11,635 | Challenges of Global Politics | PO 1012 | Challenges of Global Politics | POLS 1155 | Comparative Politics | 10 | 290. AR 2910C: Perception and Uses of Color | ARTS 1990: Art Studio Elective (Perception and Uses of Color) | 4.00 | No | The aim of this lesson is more knowledge and more mastery of colour. The physical aspects (from what, from which phenomena does colour appear?), physiological aspects (how we perceive colour) and cultural aspects (historical: related to notions of harmony for example, sociological: why certain societies use colour more than others) will be studied. In parallel, students will apply these notions through a series of practical exercises and projects which will help them to better use colour, its combinations and interactions: to understand different types of mixes, contrasts and associations of colour but also to be able to name and recognize different colours. | 11,683 | Perception and Uses of Color | AR 2910C | Perception and Uses of Color | ARTS 1990 | Art Studio Elective (Perception and Uses of Color) | 10 | 290. CL 1025: The World, The Text, The Critic I | ENGL 1700: Global Literature 1 | 4.00 | No | "Together with “The World, the Text, and the Critic II,” this course helps students to acquire a basic map of the history of texts from the beginnings of writing up to our own time. This course covers the first half, until the beginning of the 18th century. Through guided reading you will acquire essential facts about writers, works, and periods that will help you place your individual readings into a wider context and to find your way through the rich and diverse material you will encounter when studying literature. Parallel to this systematic instruction, each of the three professors who teach this course will present to you an historical moment which has witnessed either the birth or a significant transformation of a literary genre. This will show you how we approach our material as students of texts, and will help you gain a deeper sense of how writing changes in time and is engaged urgently in relations with readers and with the world in which it emerges." | 11,689 | The World, The Text, The Critic I | CL 1025 | The World, The Text, The Critic I | ENGL 1700 | Global Literature 1 | 10 | 290. CL 3089: The Bible | PHIL 1120: Understanding the Bible | IC, SI | 4.00 | No | "This course intends to allow students to better understand the Bible’s influence on literature and cultural history through a first- and second-hand approach: reading a literary masterpiece of the English language (The King James Version of the Bible); reading the history during which it was written (the paratextual elements including individual book introductions and annotations of The New Oxford Annotated Bible). Respecting individual belief structures, this course shall not be taught from a religious perspective. The readings shall attempt to move chronologically forward while also respecting the order of the books of the Bible. In the first half of the course (→ midterm), we shall concentrate on the Hebrew Bible, or the writings included in what Christians call the Old Testament. Readings shall include the story of the Creation, the Fall of humanity, the Flood and Noah’s Ark, the Sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis), the Crossing of the Read Sea, the Building of the Ark of the Covenant, the Ten Commandments (Exodus), the death of Moses before the Promised Land (Deuteronomy), the Tribes of Israel (Joshua), the battle between David and Goliath and the friendship between David and Jonathan (I Samuel), the kings of Israel (I Samuel, II Samuel, Kings), the book of God’s servant Job, as well as a selection of Psalms and Proverbs, the poetic works (Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon) and the major (Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel) and minor (Amos, Jonah) prophets. In the second half of the course (→ final), we shall cover a brief selection of the Deuterocanonical Books (known as the Apocrypha) including Judith, Susana, and Bel and the Dragon, before moving swiftly onto New Testament readings including all four canonical Gospels – the Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew and Luke) and John –, as well as the Acts of the Apostles (or the continuation of Luke), a selection of the Epistles (Galatians, I Corinthians, James, I John) and the story of the Apocalypse (Revelation)." | 11,690 | The Bible | CL 3089 | The Bible | PHIL 1120 | Understanding the Bible | 10 | 290. CL/DR 3038: Shakespeare in Context | ENGL 1600: Introduction to Shakespeare | IC, SI | 4.00 | No | Over the course of this semester, we shall study in detail eight of Shakespeare’s plays while discussing them within the context of the Renaissance. The course serves as an introduction to Shakespeare’s works (and world) for those who know nothing or only a little of them, while also serving as a chance to develop a deeper understanding of them for those who have already undertaken more in-depth readings of the works of his period. The plays we study tie in with productions we shall see during the semester, as the broad theme of this course is the way in which Shakespeare makes his own theatre, or theatricality, the centrepiece of his dramas – Shakespeare’s world as a stage.A study trip is a key element of this course, and on it we shall visit London and Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare’s birthplace and home of the Royal Shakespeare Company). We also shall use video and film versions of the plays and attempt to relate what we are reading and seeing to contemporary questions and writers. | 11,691 | Shakespeare in Context | CL/DR 3038 | Shakespeare in Context | ENGL 1600 | Introduction to Shakespeare | 10 | 290. CL/EN 2052: English Literature Since 1800 | ENGL 1501: British Literature 1800 to Present | 4.00 | No | The course will look at major examples of prose, theatre and poetry from the early Romantic period to the present. While trying to see lines and forms of a continuous process, we of course focus on the fantastically different works that make up the three “branches” of English literature. We’ll follow the radical energies of Romanticism from its heroic period through the confusions and certainties of Victorian culture and hegemonic realism, leading to the metamorphic ambitions of Modernism, the encounters of European hermetic influence with a differently politicized twentieth century, and the varieties of a contemporary “avant-garde”. We shall look at the development of prose fiction from Brontë’s weirdly wonderful Romantic novel Wuthering Heights to the ethical ambivalences of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Woolf’s quintessential Modernist elegy To the Lighthouse, as well as extracts from Joyce’s vertiginous, endlessly fascinating Ulysses and shorter works by other authors including Lawrence and Beckett, ending with Jean Rhys’s postcolonial, Creole-centred rewriting of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea. We shall also watch a National Theatre production of Jane Eyre to see how such a recentring is actually performed. In the theatre, the course will concentrate on the axes of existential solitude, socio-political revolt and black humour which have dominated the British stage since the Second World War. | 11,692 | English Literature Since 1800 | CL/EN 2052 | English Literature Since 1800 | ENGL 1501 | British Literature 1800 to Present | 10 | 290.
