Partner Institution

For over 70 years, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) has been the nation’s leader in producing high-quality international study abroad and exchange programs. A non-profit, non-governmental international exchange organization, CIEE helps to set and raise the standards of international education.

CIEE offers a wide range of programs that cater to diverse academic interests and career goals, providing students with immersive experiences that enhance their global awareness and intercultural skills. Their programs are known for their academic rigor, cultural immersion, and comprehensive support services, including orientation, housing, and on-site staff assistance.

Through this partnership, N.U.in Germany students have the opportunity to study in vibrant Berlin, a city rich in history, culture, and innovation. CIEE’s Berlin Global Institute provides state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, study spaces, and a resourceful library. The institute also offers various extracurricular activities, excursions, and community engagement opportunities, allowing students to fully experience and integrate into the local culture.

Admitted students should visit their Application Status Check regarding individual eligibility for Fall 2025 N.U.in locations.

Academics Overview: Please review the N.U.in Program Academics page to view course offerings, your program’s academic handbook, and the timeline for course selection and academic advising.

Course Logistics: You will learn more about the host institution’s policies and expectations during on-site orientation.

Class Schedule: Information on course offerings will be made available in April 2025. You will receive your finalized class schedule when you arrive in Germany during student orientation.

Textbooks: It is essential that you purchase all course textbooks (either hard copies or electronic if you prefer) before your departure, as English-language textbooks are very difficult to order in Germany. However, you should not purchase textbooks until your courses have been confirmed by your academic advisor. If you need a calculator, double check the specifications with your course instructor so you select the correct model.

Grading Scale: To learn more about the grading scale, please refer to the Academic Handbook for this program.

Academic Resources Abroad

Tutoring and additional support is available to you, but you must seek out these resources. You may speak to your lecturer or a site staff member to discuss any issues that you may be having academically. The following resources are available to you through CIEE:

  • Academic mentoring through one-on-one sessions.
  • All faculty hold regular office hours (listed on each syllabus) and are also available by appointment to meet with you to provide additional support.
  • You can seek group-based assistance for certain classes, like “Calculus for Business” and “Principles of Microeconomics.” Please discuss this service during your on-site orientation.
  • For writing, you may receive individual support by visiting the instructor and/or the Academic Writing Tutor for the “Academic Writing” course. Both are available to meet with you to provide support with drafting, revising, and final editing of writing assignments.
  • In addition to Northeastern academic support, you will have a CIEE Academic Resource Advisor available to help you throughout the semester.

Northeastern Peer Tutoring on Knack: Northeastern has partnered with Knack, a leading peer tutoring platform, to offer free peer tutoring to all Northeastern undergraduate students across its global network. All Northeastern peer tutors on the Knack platform are successful current upper-class undergraduate students, and a number of them are N.U.in alumni. You can request a peer tutor for your courses on Knack by searching for the NU equivalent course title and/or course code. For questions about Northeastern Peer Tutoring on Knack, please reach out at [email protected].

Learning Disabilities

If you require accommodations during your time in N.U.in Germany, you must apply directly through both CIEE and Disability Access Services at Northeastern University. Information on applying for accommodations through CIEE will be made available in the N.U.in pre-departure process over the summer. Students should also speak to their professors individually to alert them of any approved accommodations.

If you have any specific questions about the accommodations process overall, please reach out to the Disability Access Services.
