Please read and ensure that you understand the following points regarding the visa process of your N.U.in location:
As a rule, all foreigners require visas for stays of more than three months (90 days) in Ireland. Exemptions apply to European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) citizens, UK citizens and Swiss nationals. In addition, citizens of certain countries, including the United States of America and Canada, may enter Ireland without a visa and register with the Irish Naturalization and Immigration Service (INIS) after arrival to extend their stay beyond 90 days. Please use the “Check if you need an Irish visa” tool to determine if you are eligible to register with INIS for your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) after arriving in Ireland U.S. citizens and other visa exempt enrolled in the N.U.in Ireland program will receive more information about registering with INIS upon arrival in Dublin.
Citizens of visa-required countries who require visas in advance must apply online for a long stay Study Visa (also called a Type D visa) before arriving in Ireland; some students may also be required to provide their biometric information at a local Irish visa application centre (VAC) or Consulate as part of the visa application process.
Applying for an Irish visa requires time, effort, and multiple steps. While we will provide guidance on the process, it is ultimately your responsibility to secure your visa in a timely manner. Processing times can vary from several weeks to months, depending on the consular authority and your specific situation. Please note that you may need to submit your passport for visa processing, which could impact any summer travel plans requiring your passport. Please be aware that you will also be responsible for any fees associated with the application, including consular fees, travel expenses, and additional documentation (e.g., background checks or medical certificates). Please stay proactive and check your Northeastern email regularly for updates. It is imperative not to wait until the last minute to begin the visa application process.
After arrival, students will need to apply for an Irish Residence Permit in Dublin, which will cost approximately 300 Euros. University College Dublin and Northeastern University will provide further information and assistance with this process.
If you cannot obtain a valid visa in time for the program start date, please refer to the N.U.in Payment and Withdrawal Policy in your Application Status Check (posted in late spring) and contact the Global Experience Office to discuss next steps.
