Portugal: Portugal is the oldest nation in Europe, becoming an independent country in 1143. It is a semi-presidential republic with a head of government, the prime minister, and a head of state, the president, who has the power to appoint the prime minister and other government members. Due to a great geographical position, Portugal enjoys excellent weather without the issues typically associated with tropical climates, such as typhoons or hurricanes. With two coasts, it is a fantastic destination for sunbathing and surfing. Portugal is also a strategic starting point for travel, offering inexpensive flights to various destinations. The city is a hub for diverse ideas and cultures living in harmony and respect.

Lisbon: Known for its hospitality and the family-like way it welcomes visitors, Lisbon, located on the western tip of Europe is the perfect place to launch your study abroad experience. If you are looking for a city full of authenticity, where ancient history and old customs intermix with cultural entertainment and high-tech innovation, Lisbon is the place for you! The sunny weather, excellent cuisine, and safe atmosphere make it the perfect icing on the cake. Lisbon is renowned for its ornate architecture and tradition of Fado music. But some of its best features are in the everyday experiences—spectacular hilltop vistas in Alfama or at St. George’s Castle, and friendly locals.

Neighborhood: As Lisbon grew in the mid-20th century, it expanded north, away from the waterfront. Residential and business districts emerged around long, broad avenues, today collectively known as Avenidas Novas (“New Avenues”). The main avenue is Avenida da República which was originally lined with mansions. Today, the neighborhood is a trendy hotspot, alive with activity and a diverse expat community. Avenidas Novas will place you at the pinnacle of Lisbon city living. The public transport in the neighborhood is one of the best in Lisbon, connecting residents to other areas without the ‘tourist’ feeling of more central locations The neighborhood is known for its green spaces, such as Eduardo VII Park, and proximity to cultural attractions like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.

Campus: Students will take classes at the CIEE Lisbon Center, located within the NOVA FCSH – Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas campus. Universidade Nova de Lisboa, founded in 1977, is now one of the highest-ranking social sciences and humanities schools in Portugal. It is dedicated to education, scientific research, and cultural creation, hosting more than 2,800 undergraduate students and 16 research centers in the heart of Lisbon. N.U.in Portugal students will take classes taught by CIEE-hired faculty. The campus is situated in a central location, close to many historical and cultural sites, offering students a vibrant academic and social experience.

Climate: Lisbon experiences a Mediterranean climate, with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. It is recommended to pack light- to medium-weight clothing and rainwear for the unpredictable weather in the cooler months.
